Dear YWI Board and Cooperators:
Here is the status of the Implementation Plan:
Stream/Watershed Assessment
The National Aquatic Monitoring Center is now processing our
benthic plots. The last samples, 2 of the 3 necessary transects
from our control watershed, were received by them last week. We
expect to publish results from the study in May.
On April 16-17, I worked on foot in the Humbug Canyon
watershed of the North Fork American River gathering control
data. I picked Humbug Canyon as our control under consultation
with John Hiscocks (CA Dept. Fish and Game) and Ann Carlson
(Tahoe NF Forest Fisheries Biologist). Humbug Canyon was not
perfect, but it was the best compromise, given that we wanted
a
control in the same elevation zone and as close to our study area
as possible. We still need to complete the headwaters transect
(t1) in Humbug Canyon. I am hopeful it can be completed in one
day next week.
Parcel Vegetation Mapping
Sean Kerrigan and David Lukas have completed the polygon
mapping (drawing lines on aerial photos) for the 'Inimim Parcels.
Field transects and attributing the polygons (describing what
kind
of vegetation exists in each one) will be completed over the next
few weeks.
YWI recieves EPA Award
On April 22, Felicia Marcus, EPA Regional Director, presented
YWI with a special award recognizing YWI's work towards
sustainable forestry on public lands, and the long-term protection
and management of old-growth forests. The award was presented
at a ceremony at the EPA Regional Office in San Francisco.
Over 200 representatives from city, state and federal agencies
and non-profit organizations attended the ceremony, representing
organizations from Arizona to Hawaii. Twenty individuals and
organizations received similar awards.
Warm regards to all!
Eric Beckwitt
