YFN Summer Field Tour: Broadcast Burn Units
The Yuba Forest Network is hosting a free, all-day field tour on June 24 — an on-the-ground look at two active prescribed fire projects along the South Yuba River. Visit broadcast burn units, hear from project leads, and explore the landscape-scale strategies behind the work.

The Yuba Forest Network is hosting a summer field tour on Wednesday, June 24 from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM — a free, all-day look at two active prescribed fire projects in the Nevada County foothills.
The tour visits two adjacent landscape-scale projects where broadcast and pile burning is planned or underway, offering a chance to walk the burn units, hear from project leads about fuels treatment planning, and discuss the landscape-scale strategies connecting the work.

The Sites
Site 1 — Sierra Foothill Forest Climate Resilience Project
Jones Bar area, South Yuba River · Sierra Streams Institute
A 625-acre landscape project stitching together 300+ private parcels, BLM land, and outdoor schools across the Jones Bar Firewise Community. Treatments include hand thinning, mastication, and broadcast and pile burning to improve forest health and invite low-severity fire back into the landscape. Prescribed fire is being implemented by First Rain Land Stewardship Services.
Site 2 — Hoyt-Purdon Fuel Reduction & Prescribed Fire Project
Purdon Rd, South Yuba River · American Rivers and Terra Fuego Resource Foundation
A 570-acre project in the wildland-urban interface outside Nevada City. Treatments include hand and mechanical thinning, and pile and broadcast burning to protect communities, water supplies, and the adjacent South Yuba River.
